Eligibility to purchase a leasehold on Campus in this lottery is different from other lottery purchases. Faculty1 who are eligible are:
  • Members of the Academic Council with a 100% appointment for a minimum term of three years with the possibility of reappointment (or who have received tenure, or who have an appointment with continuing term2) and working full-time (100% FTE); and
  • Confirmed participants who have attended an Open House or House Tour


  1. Faculty couples with dual eligibility may apply individually. All faculty eligible to purchase must complete and submit an Interest List Application to participate in the lottery
  2. Appointment must be approved by the President; additionally, the appointment date and start date must be not more than sixty (60) days after the date the purchase transition closes (close of escrow or COE)

This lottery will comprise of 1 single-family home located in the San Juan Hill neighborhood within the Stanford Campus Residential Leaseholders (SCRL) Subdivision.

This home is subject to a Stanford Residential Ground Lease, and Stanford is selling this leasehold interest through a random number drawing (lottery).

Stanford Residential Ground Lease

All homes located on Stanford lands are subject to a ground lease. Not all ground leases are the same. The following is a brief summary of certain key features in the Stanford Residential Ground Lease for this home:

  • The lease term is 51 years with an option to extend.
  • The home must be sold back to Stanford upon lease expiration or resale.
  • The eligible person must occupy the home as the principal place of residence.
  • The eligible person may sublease the home to another eligible person for 1 year at a time only while on approved University lease of absence. Other rental options are limited.
  • The lessee must pay ground rent to Stanford.
  • The lessee pays property taxes and premiums for hazard and earthquake insurance.
